Janel Meints, CTRS, DCP is the Center Coordinator for the Barbara and Richard Csomay Center for Gerontological Excellence within the University of Iowa College of Nursing. She is a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) and Dementia Care Practitioner (DCP) with extensive experience working with older adults, individuals living with dementia, family care partners, healthcare professionals, and community organizations. Her work is centered on promoting person-centered dementia care practices that enhance quality of life, preserve dignity, and support meaningful engagement for individuals across the dementia journey.

At the Csomay Center, Janel supports initiatives focused on aging education, gerontological workforce development, and community partnerships. She collaborates with faculty, students, healthcare professionals, and community organizations to advance educational opportunities, outreach efforts, and innovative approaches to improving care for older adults.

Janel is also a therapy dog handler, working with dogs specifically trained to support older adults and individuals living with dementia. She is passionate about incorporating non-pharmacological interventions, therapeutic adaptations, and evidence-based strategies that foster connection, reduce social isolation, and promote emotional well-being. Her work focuses on advancing dementia-capable care, meaningful engagement, resources for navigation, and innovative non-pharmacological approaches that enhance quality of life for older adults.
