The University of Iowa is one of eleven National Institutes of Health Centers of Excellence in Pain Education (CoEPE). CoEPE objectives are to develop pain management training and educational resources for interdisciplinary learners using case-based interactive e-learning modules. The UI team is co-led by Drs. Keela Herr and Kathleen Sluka and includes representatives from Nursing, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Social Work, Rehabilitation Therapy, and Medicine. Cases developed by all the CoEPEs are available for free to all health profession schools and faculty through the NIH Pain Consortium web resource.
The Iowa CoEPE has focused web-based interactive case development on older adult pain challenges. Current cases include:
- Betty Miller: Older Female with Right Shoulder Pain
- Donald William: Older Adult Right Total Knee Arthroplasty
- Margaret Andersen: An Older Adult with Limited Communication
